The oil in Equi-Jewel® is highly digestible, but in a palatable, pelleted form. 500g of Equi-Jewel contains the same amount of energy as 250ml (1/2 pint) of liquid oil

In scientific studies conducted by Kentucky Equine Research, the effect of feeding Equi-Jewel and corn oil were compared. During strenuous exercise, horses being fed Equi-Jewel had lower lactic acid levels than horses fed corn oil. The inclusion of rice bran as a substitute for corn oil in rations also resulted in lower heart rates and subsequent shorter recovery periods

Equi-Jewel Feeding Rate

These feeding rates are intended as a guide only. Always try to feed a minimum of 1.5% of bodyweight as good quality forage per day.

Equi-Jewel® can be fed at a rate of 500g - 1kg per day to achieve appropriate body condition, up to a maximum of 1.5kg per day when extra conditioning is required. The degree of supplementation required is dependent on the desired calorie intake.

Although the starch level of Equi-Jewel may be higher than expected, it is important top bear in mind that it is at a significantly lower feeding rate. If feeding 500g of Equi-Jewel, you will be providing your horse with 100g of starch. If you compare this to a feed with only 5% starch but you need to feed 2kg per day, you would also be supplying 100g of starch. Therefore, because of the lower feeding rate of Equi-Jewel, we do not consider the starch to be an issue with digestive, metabolic or muscle disorders.
